The Carbon Flip 2010

Having introduced the Carbon Flip to the world in the summer of 2008 and encouraged other Ultimate leagues to take on this practice, PUL this year is giving the Carbon Flip a new twist. Taking their lead from Edmonton Ultimate, rather than count the number of motorized vehicles, we will now base the Carbon Flip on the number of players who did not drive to the game. That means those who were either passengers in vehicles or who arrived at the field under their own power (bike, walk, skateboard, etc.).

The reason for changing this is to ensure those teams that have a full complement of players showing up for their game are not penalized when the other team is faced with playing savage. For example, a team of 14 people may have arrived in three cars, but nine of those people may have biked. The other team arrives in two cars, and only 2 biked. Seems fitting that the team that made more of an effort to get to the game under their own speed should be rewarded with winning the Flip.

As always, we’ve developed this idea by ensuring the Carbon Flip remains simple and straightforward.

Background

2007 saw PULs first EcoDisc environmental initiative in the form of the EcoDisc Hat Tourney - wherein tournament results were based on carbon, waste and recycling performance, as well as field results.

To build on PULs EcoDisc values, a tangible step will be taken to impact the carbon emissions associated with our summer league. To this end, summer league captains have agreed to the implementation of the Carbon Flip.

Rationale

The carbon flip concept will provide the combined benefits of:

  • Reducing the carbon-related impact of our summer leagues.
  • Keeping environmental impact top of mind within our league.
  • Acting as a tangible example to our community of how green priorities can complement regular activities.
These benefits will be accrued without impacting the integrity of competition.
EcoDisc Fact: The amount of CO2 not emitted as a result of taking one 13 km round trip bike ride (estimated distance from downtown Peterborough to Trent Fields) instead of driving: 8 Pounds. Extrapolated from facts found in: You Can Prevent Global Warming (and save money!) 51 Easy Ways; Jeffrey Langholz, Kelly Turner, 2003.

Managing Complications

As is the case at the EcoDisc Hat Tourney, the Honour System is in effect; we must trust that a quick survey of the team by the captain of 'how many passengers have we got here?', will yield a quick and reliable result. Further, it is not relevant exactly how many passengers each team has, simply who has more. Lastly, the token penalty of the loss of flip was chosen so as not to impact the integrity of the game if a car arrives late, so be it.
